The following is a timeline of AIDS and AIDS related news about Egypt from the late 1980s to 1999.
In the late 1980s an AIDS patient quarantined at a local hostpial was shot dead by a security guard when he threatened the hospital director during an attempt to escape. Another AIDS patient at the same hospital had her baby delivered by her mother when physicians and nurses on duty refused to touch her. ( source: Los Angeles Times 24 March 1992 ).
270 HIV positive foreigners had been deported from Egypt in the period up to 1994. As of 1994 178 Egyptians had died of AIDS and another 167 were HIV positive (source www.ilga.org). We have no information on reported numbers of AIDS cases since then.
On 11 December 1994 soccer player Yusif Omar who had joined the professional football team Olympic of Alexandria the previous summer was deported after testing HIV positive (source Reuter and www.ilga.org)
June 1997: The estimated number of Egyptians with HIV was 8,100 source www.aids.africa.com
Early 1998: An opinion poll of student and blue-collar workers carried out by the Faculty of Mass Communications at Cairo revealed that about thirty percent of all respondents thought that AIDS could be transmitted by insects. Another twenty percent were concerned about infection from public toilets or kissing. ( Source: Karim El Gawhry writing int Middle East Report Spring 1998 in www.merip.org )
Early 1998: An Egyptian newspaper carried an article in which it was claimed that "AIDS is God's pubishment for all those who pollute the country with their sins." ( Source - Ibid.)
In 1999 five blood banks were closed down after an HIV contamination scare after a woman contracted HIV through tainted blood (CNN interactive 15/02/99 and www.hivdent.org)
